“Mission Blue,” a documentary about the legendary oceanographer, marine biologist – and 2009 TED Prize winner – Sylvia Earle, has been making waves at film festivals around the world. The film, which was directed by Robert Nixon and Fisher Stevens, is both a profile of Earle and her campaign to create a global network of protected marine sanctuaries.
The documentary follows Earle, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and avid environmentalist, for three years on her escapades exploring the ocean, as she crusades to protect it. Earle has been at the frontier of deep ocean exploration for more than four decades and her inspiring ongoing efforts to save the ocean provide compelling human interest, while Bryce Groark’s spectacular underwater photography explores the majesty and endangered status of the world’s aquatic life.
